The Psychology of First Impressions
How Your Brand Speaks Before You Do
Looking back at my college graduation photos, I can’t help but cringe.
It was the late ’90s, and my class was exhibiting our big grad show—a chance to showcase our designs to family, friends, industry professionals, and potential employers. Naturally, I wanted to make a good impression.
So, what did I do? I went “professional.”
I showed up in a navy pantsuit, a crisp white blouse, and a neatly tied neck scarf—very businesslike, very serious. At the time, I thought this was what success looked like. But here’s the thing: that outfit said absolutely nothing about me.
There wasn’t a hint of the creativity, boldness, or personality that would eventually define my personal brand. No vibrant florals, no signature “Laura Pink,” no natural curls.
How did I get there? I was trying to fit into an image I thought others expected of me, but in doing so, I missed an opportunity to not only stand out, but actually look like me.
First Impressions Shape Perceptions
What I didn’t realize back then is that people don’t just hear what you say—they feel what you project. Within seconds, they’re forming opinions based on how you look, how you carry yourself, and the story your presence tells.
This is true not just for individuals, but for businesses too. Your brand—whether it’s your personal style or your company’s logo—is constantly making a statement. The question is: does it say what you want it to?
Why Personal and Business Branding Go Hand-in-Hand
For founders, personal and business branding are often inseparable (although they shouldn’t be, but that's a conversation for another day). As the face of your company, you represent everything your brand stands for. Misalignment between the two can create confusion—or worse, mistrust.
Think about it: If your business branding is bold and innovative, but your personal style feels outdated or unpolished, there’s a disconnect. Likewise, if your personal branding is dynamic and energetic, but your company website looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2010, you risk sending mixed signals.
This is why alignment matters. When your personal and business brands reflect your values, personality, and mission, you create consistency. And consistency builds trust.
The Subconscious Power of Visuals
We live in a visual world, where design, colors, and even typography influence how people perceive your brand. Research shows it takes just seven seconds (or less!) to form a first impression.
In that fleeting moment, your audience is asking:
• Can I trust this person or business?
• Are they credible?
• Do they align with what I’m looking for?
These judgments happen subconsciously. Your branding is your first handshake, your opening line, your way of saying, “I’m exactly what you’ve been looking for.”
Lessons from My Own Brand Journey
Once I embraced my true style—natural curls, vibrant florals, and my signature pink—I stopped trying to fit into someone else’s mold. Chalk it up to age, confidence, and giving fewer f*cks, but my personal brand is now a true reflection of who I am. And it aligns perfectly with the bold, creative values of my business.
Now, whether I’m on stage, on Instagram, or meeting someone for the first time, my personal brand speaks before I do. It’s intentional, authentic, and memorable.
The same applies to the businesses I work with. When your branding reflects your unique essence—whether through visuals, messaging, or tone—you create a powerful connection that resonates with your audience.
Make Your First Impression Count
So, what does your personal or business brand say about you? Does it align with your values, personality, and goals? Or does it need a little work to tell the story you want it to?
Remember, branding isn’t just about looking good—it’s about creating trust and connection. And when you get it right, your brand becomes your greatest asset.
